Hippie CEO Life #53 - The Power of Purpose
A behind the scenes view of building a more humanistic company.

“At Patagonia, making a profit is not the goal because the Zen master would say profits happen 'when you do everything else right'.” ~Yvon Chouinard
As i dive into this week's topic, i can't help but feel a bit uneasy, worried that some readers might misconstrue my message. i want to emphasize that being strategic about revenue growth and running a financially stable company is a priority for us at 33 Sticks, but it's not the driving force behind why we are in business.
At 33 Sticks, financial considerations are always on my mind—company finances, investment strategies, profit-sharing with team members, and ways to support our employees' growth and development. However, the true purpose behind starting 33 Sticks had nothing to do with making a profit; it was to build a business that i would be excited to work at and, as the company grew, to provide the same experience for others.
Our purpose has become a defining factor for why customers choose us. Yes, we excel in analytics, but so do many other agencies, consultants, and freelancers. As Simon Sinek so eloquently put it, “People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
This philosophy has guided our approach to scaling the company, hiring employees, and selecting clients. With profit not being our main objective, it's been easier to make choices that align with our vision and purpose. To quote Simon Sinek again, “The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. It is to do business with people who believe what you believe.” Our aim is to create a highly profitable company as a byproduct of our incredible ability to attract employees, partners, clients, and advocates who share our beliefs.
i invite you to reflect on your own purpose in business and life. Ask yourself what truly drives you and whether your goals and values align with your company's mission. By understanding and embracing your purpose, you can create a more meaningful and fulfilling work environment, attract like-minded individuals, and ultimately achieve success on your own terms. Remember, the most powerful businesses are built not just on financial prowess, but on a deep-rooted sense of purpose that resonates with those who share your beliefs.
